DANIEL HOESL
DIRECTOR/WRITER
Daniel Hoesl, b. 1982, explores genre-defying perspectives, looking into the abyss with humor with his passion for unfiltered entertainment. The Hollywood Reporter once described him as "clown prince of Austrian cinema" who "wields satire like a crystal blade."
His films explore the price of money and Hoesl has emerged as a sharp observer of wealth, ambition and entitlement, without being bound to any one theme or genre, a cinephile oscillating between starkness and absurdity.
Originally electrical engineer, Hoesl studied multimedia arts in Salzburg and filmmaking at FAMU in Prague, where his early shorts led to unease and to work as assistant director of notorious Ulrich Seidl and others.
His latest satire VENI VIDI VICI, written by Hoesl and co-directed by Julia Niemann, screened at Sundance 2024 in the world competition and had its European premiere at Rotterdam, earning wide international acclaim and selling to numerous territories globally. His recent Italian-language feature essay UN GRAN CASINO premiered at Rotterdam 2025, starring Sandra Ceccarelli.
His narrative feature debut SOLDIER JANE aka Soldate Jeannette premiered at Sundance 2013 and won the Tiger Award in Rotterdam. His sophomore WINWIN followed at Rotterdam 2016. His first documentary DAVOS, co-directed by Julia Niemann, debuted at Vision du Réel in Nyon 2020 and was awarded the renowned Austrian ROMY.
Beyond directing, Hoesl worked on series for Komplizen Film Berlin and Satel Film Vienna. He sometimes appears as an actor, recently alongside Corinna Harfouch and Lilith Stangenberg in Julian Radlmaier’s Bloodsuckers, Berlinale 2021.
Daniel Hoesl is represented by Katrin Näher.
