MARKUS SCHLEINZER

DIRECTOR/WRITER

Before making films himself, Markus Schleinzer worked for years as casting director, working on over 60 films for directors such as Jessica Hausner, Michael Glawogger, Ulrich Seidl and Michael Haneke.

His sensational feature film debut "Michael" was invited to the Cannes Film Festival in 2011 and received numerous nominations and awards, including the Austrian and European Film Awards and the Max Ophüls Prize.

Schleinzer’s second film, "Angelo", is a haunting portrait of Angelo Soliman. The film celebrated its world premiere in Toronto and screened directly afterwards in San Sebastian. It then received a triple nomination for Best Feature Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay at the Austrian Film Awards 2019, and was also nominated for the 2018 Platform Prize at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Schleinzer participated in the Berlinale competition with his third film, "Rose", where it received an overwhelming response. Set in the 17th century, his historical drama tells the story of a woman who disguises herself as a male soldier in the hope of integrating into a secluded village community. Sandra Hüller played the lead role and received the Silver Bear for the Best Leading Performance.
