BERND LANGE
WRITER
Bernd Lange studied at the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg (FABW), and though he began his career directing, since 2007 he has concentrated solely on writing. His graduation film “Requiem” was screened in competition at the Berlinale in 2006 and received numerous awards, including the Lola in Silver for Best Film at the German Film Awards.
“Requiem” also marks the beginning of Lange’s collaboration with director Hans-Christian Schmid, which led to his screenplays for “Sturm” (2009) and “Was bleibt” (2012), both of which screened in competition at the Berlinale. Schmid and Lange also created the joint series “Das Verschwinden,” which received numerous nominations and awards, including the German Television Award in 2017.
In 2021, Lange received the Bavarian Television Award for both the double episode of “Jubiläumstatort,” directed by Dominik Graf and Pia Strietmann, and the adaptation of Siegfrid Lenz' “Der Überläufer,” directed by Florian Gallenberger.
In 2022, the first season of the successful Netflix series “The Empress“ was released, with Katrin Gebbe and Florian Cossen as directors. In the same year, the series “The Net Germany“ and “Strafe” were shown at the Munich Film Festival. “Strafe” also ran in the Canneseries competition. The series adapts novels by Ferdinand von Schirach, Bernd Lange's episode “Der Taucher” was directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel.

On February 20, 2026, the first local original production for HBO Max will premiere. “Banksters” was created and written by Bernd Lange and directed by Gregor Schnitzler and Cüneyt Kaya. W&B Filmproduktion produced the series, with Quirin Berg, Max Wiedemann, Marcus Welke, Bernd Lange, and Kida Khodr Ramadan serving as executive producers.
The series is about Yusuf, who is arrested on suspicion of multiple bank robberies. But the question is: Who were his accomplices? Silence means prison, talking means betrayal. And who betrayed him? A series about identity, family, friendship, and money, based loosely on true events.
4 Blocks Zero
The second series, which Bernd Lange wrote as head writer on behalf of W&B for HBO Max, is scheduled to launch in fall 2026.
It is a prequel to the award-winning gangster drama “4 Blocks,” which was produced between 2017 and 2022 and was extremely successful.
It tells the story of Toni Hamady and the Hamady family in Berlin in the 1990s. Having fled Lebanon and only tolerated in Germany, they struggled to gain a foothold here.
It is directed by Özgür Yildirim.

Berlin is on the brink of collapse; Vampires offer people a future - but is it a pact with the devil?
Bernd Lange supported the writing team of the series “City of Blood”, which was filmed in 2024. A release date is not yet known. Amusement Park Film is producing the dystopian series for Disney+ .
TATORT - INNERE ANGELEGENHEITEN
Another script by Berd Lange for SWR's Schwarzwald-Tatort has been shot in April. Robert Thalheim is again directing, the detectives will continue to be played by Eva Löbau and Hans-Jochen Wager.
A release date is not yet known.
