MICHAEL PROEHL

WRITER

Michael Proehl is an award-winning screenwriter. He studied German studies and art history in Frankfurt and Freiburg, and subsequently studied screenwriting at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy.

Proehl's feature debut, the HR co-production "Katze im Sack," won the First Steps Awards, and his screenplay for it won an award at the Max Ophüls Festival. Proehl has written numerous screenplays for the popular Tatort series. “Tatort: Weil sie böse sind” was nominated for the Grimme Prize and awarded the German Television Prize. “Tatort: Im Schmerz geboren” also received the Grimme Prize, among other awards.

In addition, Proehl, together with Karim Patwa, wrote the script for the feature film “Driften,” which won the screenplay prize at the Max Ophüls Festival. With Holger Karsten Schmidt, he wrote the screenplay for the film “Das weiße Kaninchen,” which won the Grimme Prize in the fiction category. In 2021, he wrote the mini-series “German Crime Story: Gefesselt” based on a true crime story for Amazon Prime.

GERMAN CRIME Story: Gefesselt

Michael Proehl’s latest work, the six-part series “German Crime Story: Gefesselt,” is inspired by a true criminal case. It is the story of one of Germany’s most notorious serial killers, the so-called “Acid Barrel Murder.” The true crime series is directed by Florian Schwarz, produced by Neue Bioskop Television and available on Prime Video.
